I. Monumento a Alfonso XII & Central Lake: The most iconic landmark in El Retiro Park. The grand monument, framed by its elegant semicircular colonnade and overlooking the central lake, creates a regal backdrop with sweeping views.
- Important Note: This is an exceptionally popular spot for watching the sunset. Despite the beautiful warm light, I strongly recommend avoiding this area during the golden hour, as it gets packed with crowds. Early morning is the best time for a quiet, intimate proposal here.
II. Jardines de Cecilio Rodríguez: A tranquil hidden gem! It’s far less crowded, features lush ivy-covered columns, free-roaming peacocks, and gorgeous hydrangeas blooming around June.

Important Note: Check operating hours in advance — this specific garden closes earlier than the main park and changes between summer and winter seasons.
III. Jardín del Parterre: Elegant French-style gardens with perfectly manicured trees and a refined, stately feel.
IV. La Rosaleda (Rose Garden): A breathtaking romantic setting that bursts into full bloom from late April to early June (depending on the weather).

Important Note: It gets quite busy. Plan your proposal right at opening time, and double-check opening hours, as they differ from regular park times.
V. Rowboat Proposal on the Lake: For a classic, intimate proposal right on the water in the heart of the park.
- Pro Tip: You should book your rowboat in advance via the “Madrid Móvil” app to secure your time slot.
⚠️ IMPORTANT UPDATE — Palacio de Cristal (Crystal Palace): While once a favorite, the Crystal Palace is currently closed for major restoration work (expected to continue until around 2027). The building is covered with construction materials and large protective banners, making it unsuitable as a photography location. I recommend choosing one of the beautiful gardens mentioned above instead.
2. Royal Palace Area (Palacio Real & Jardines de Sabatini)
For a breathtaking, royal aesthetic, proposing near the Royal Palace offers an iconic Madrid backdrop with views over the palace and its surrounding gardens.
- Best Time to Go: Early morning for soft light and empty plazas, or golden hour at sunset. Cloudy days are also great for balanced lighting throughout the day.
- Bonus: You get the magnificent Almudena Cathedral just a few steps away for a seamless post-proposal engagement photoshoot.
3. Prado Museum Area (An Exclusive Hidden Gem)
Here is an insider location you won’t find in any standard travel guide — and it happens to be one of my absolute personal favorites. While popping the question inside the museum galleries isn’t allowed, the exterior architecture of the Prado Museum offers an ultra-sophisticated, artistic European backdrop.
Why It’s Special: The magnificent neoclassical facades, grand stone staircases, and historic arches create a timeless, cinematic aesthetic that feels deeply romantic and refined.
Photographer’s Tip: Thanks to the generous shade provided by the massive museum building, this location offers a much wider time window with soft, flattering light throughout the day, making scheduling far more flexible without sacrificing photo quality.
4. Historic City Center (For Bold Couples)
If you love city energy and don’t mind a bit of public attention, Madrid’s historic streets provide a cinematic, lively atmosphere for your proposal.
Personally, I love Plaza de Canalejas. It is home to one of Madrid’s most stunning historic landmarks, Palacio de la Equitativa (now housing the luxury Four Seasons Hotel), alongside the majestic Real Casino de Madrid. Just a short stroll away sits the iconic Metrópolis Building, offering an ultra-elegant, high-end European backdrop for a truly spectacular proposal.
5. Exclusive Rooftop Terraces (The Wow Factor)
If you want a modern, high-end proposal with panoramic views over Madrid’s stunning skyline, a private rooftop terrace is an unbeatable choice.
- How to Make It Happen: Rooftops require careful advance planning and coordination with venue management. I partner with a local event agency that can handle all logistics for you and grant exclusive access to the city’s finest rooftop views.

🚫 Where NOT to Propose in Madrid (Local Photographer Advice)
- Not every popular tourist attraction makes for a good romantic proposal. Here are the spots I advise skipping:
- Templo de Debod: Highly overrated for proposals. It isn’t particularly photogenic, fails to capture the authentic vibe of Madrid, and during sunset, it becomes one of the single most crowded tourist hubs in the city.
- Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol, & Gran Vía: Unless you want hundreds of tourists in your background and bright commercial signs distracting from your moment, avoid these areas. They are far too noisy, chaotic, and lacking in romance for an intimate occasion.
